How to break into law as a student
The legal profession in the UK is competitive, but structured entry programmes make it accessible at every stage of education. At GCSE and A-Level, many firms offer insight days and open days specifically designed to introduce younger students to different areas of law — corporate, criminal, family, and more. At university, vacation schemes (also called vac schemes) are the primary route into training contracts at most City and international law firms. These paid two-to-four week placements run over summer and Easter and are highly competitive. Spring insight schemes and first-year programmes offer an earlier foot in the door. Training contracts — the final stage before qualifying as a solicitor — are typically secured two years in advance. Start researching firms early, tailor your applications to each firm's practice areas, and use experiences from insight days or work experience to demonstrate genuine commercial awareness in your applications.
