Gaining experience in architecture as a student
Architecture is one of the longest qualification routes in the UK — typically seven years across Part I, Part II, and Part III. Professional work experience is not just helpful; it is a formal requirement of RIBA accreditation. The year out between Part I and Part II (sometimes called the Part I placement year) is the most significant block of professional experience, usually lasting twelve months at a practice. Beyond this mandatory year, voluntary work experience at GCSE and A-Level can strengthen your portfolio and university applications significantly. Many practices — from large commercial firms to boutique heritage studios — take on students informally during school holidays. At university level, summer placements allow you to experience different practice types and build your portfolio with real project work. Competition for positions at well-known practices is high, but smaller and regional firms often offer excellent experience with more responsibility from day one. A strong, well-presented portfolio is the most important part of your application — more so than academic grades alone.
