How to find and make the most of work experience
Work experience is the foundation of a strong CV at every stage of education. At school and sixth form, even a week of work experience in a professional environment demonstrates initiative and provides material for personal statements and future applications. At university, structured work experience placements offered by employers give a more in-depth insight into specific industries and roles. Unlike internships, work experience placements are often shorter (one to two weeks) and may be unpaid — though many employers now offer at least expenses. Treat every work experience placement as a professional opportunity: arrive on time, ask thoughtful questions, and follow up with anyone who helped you. Many students secure internships and graduate roles through connections made during work experience.
