Breaking into technology as a student
The technology sector offers some of the most accessible student entry routes in the UK. Unlike finance and law, technology firms frequently hire from non-traditional backgrounds — many internships prioritise demonstrated projects, GitHub portfolios, and problem-solving ability over degree classification. Software engineering internships are the most common, typically running over summer and open to second- or penultimate-year undergraduates. Many large firms also run structured school-leaver apprenticeships in software development, data, and cybersecurity. Insight programmes are less common in technology than in law or finance, but many firms host hackathons, open days, and virtual events that serve a similar networking function. Graduate schemes in technology typically cover rotations across software engineering, product, data, and infrastructure teams. Building a visible portfolio — contributing to open-source projects, building side projects, or completing competitive programming challenges — significantly strengthens applications even before formal work experience.
