Building your CV throughout your degree
University is the most critical period for building professional experience before graduation. The typical structured pathway for competitive industries runs: first year — insight programmes and spring weeks; second year — summer internship; third year (or final year) — convert internship to graduate offer, or apply for graduate schemes. Outside of structured programmes, part-time work, student society roles (particularly within finance or law societies), competitions, and volunteering all contribute to a strong CV. Most large graduate employers now treat the summer internship as the primary route to full-time offers — meaning that by your penultimate year, having a relevant internship confirmed for the following summer is strongly advisable. Students who miss this window should prioritise spring internships, shorter placements, and direct graduate scheme applications in their final year.
