Why building experience early matters
Getting early exposure to professional environments while studying GCSEs sets a strong foundation for later applications. University personal statements, A-Level applications, and eventually graduate job applications all benefit from demonstrable curiosity and initiative demonstrated at an early age. Many large professional services firms — particularly in law and banking — run structured school-age programmes specifically designed for GCSE students, often as part of social mobility and access initiatives. These are competitive, but realistic for motivated students. Even a short work experience placement outside of school shows initiative, and provides material for future applications and interviews.
