Pharmacy work experience: what you need and how to arrange it

Work experience in pharmacy is a requirement for applications to most pharmacy degree programmes (MPharm) in the UK. UCAS applications typically ask applicants to describe their pharmacy work experience, and shortlisting and interview processes at pharmacy schools commonly assess whether applicants have genuine first-hand exposure to the pharmacy environment. Community pharmacy: this is the most accessible setting for pre-university work experience. Local community pharmacies — Boots, Lloyds, independent practices — often accept A-Level students for week-long observation placements. The key is to contact pharmacies directly and as early as possible. Write a short, professional email explaining that you are applying to pharmacy degree programmes and would like to observe the dispensing and patient counselling processes for a week. Most pharmacies receive many such requests — asking directly and politely, with a clear explanation of why you want to study pharmacy, is more effective than waiting for a structured programme. Hospital pharmacy: placements in hospital pharmacy settings are harder to arrange independently and are less commonly available to pre-university students. Some NHS trusts run formal school placement schemes. Contact the pharmacy department at your local NHS trust directly. Undergraduate pharmacy students may have structured hospital placement components built into their degree programme. What to observe: focus on the dispensing process, patient-pharmacist consultations, medicines management, and the clinical advisory role of the pharmacist. These are the elements most relevant to discussing in a pharmacy school application.
