Training contracts: what they are and how to secure one

A training contract is the final stage of qualification as a solicitor in England and Wales. It is a two-year period of supervised legal practice at a law firm, during which you rotate through different areas of the firm — typically three or four seats of six months each. Training contracts are offered by firms of all sizes, from the largest Magic Circle firms (Allen & Overy, Clifford Chance, Freshfields, Linklaters, Slaughter and May) to national firms, regional practices, and specialist boutiques. The route to a training contract has two key stages: first, gaining experience through vacation schemes and insight days; second, applying directly to firms. Most large City firms now require applicants to complete a vacation scheme before they are considered for a training contract offer. Applications typically open 18 to 24 months before the start date, meaning you need to apply in your penultimate year of university for a contract starting two years later. The SQE (Solicitors Qualifying Examination) has replaced the LPC as the standard qualification route, though some firms still fund the LPC for their trainees. Strong commercial awareness — understanding what the firm's clients do and what drives their legal needs — is the single most important factor in differentiating successful from unsuccessful applications.
