Finance insight days: what they are and why they matter
Finance insight days (also called discovery days, open days, or insight programmes) are short events — typically one day to one week — run by banks, asset managers, accountancy firms, and fintech companies for students exploring a career in finance. They are primarily targeted at first-year undergraduates and A-Level students, and are designed to provide a structured introduction to different areas of the industry: investment banking, sales and trading, equity research, asset management, financial advisory, and more. Insight days matter because they are a direct pipeline into longer programmes. Many firms run competitive insight events that fast-track participants to spring week applications; spring weeks in turn fast-track participants to summer internship interviews. Getting an insight day at a firm where you later want to intern gives you a meaningful advantage in your internship application — you can reference specific conversations and experiences, demonstrating genuine, informed motivation. Apply to finance insight days as early as possible: many open in September and October and fill quickly. The application process is typically lighter than for a spring week or internship, but still requires a strong answer to "why this firm?".
