Technology internships: how to stand out and what to expect
Technology internships are among the most accessible and well-structured student opportunities in the UK. Unlike finance and law, which have rigid annual hiring cycles, technology firms recruit on rolling timelines — some large companies open applications in August for the following summer; others recruit in January or February. Most software engineering internships at large technology companies follow a similar structure: online application, an online coding assessment or take-home exercise, one or two technical interviews (covering data structures, algorithms, and sometimes system design), and a final round. The technical interview is the key stage. Consistent preparation using coding challenge platforms is more important than the degree you study. For product, data, and UX internships, the process is different — focusing on case studies, analytical thinking, and portfolio work rather than algorithmic coding. Many technology companies in the UK run both 12-week and placement-year (9–12 month) internships. The latter are increasingly competitive and are often treated as extended hiring assessments for graduate roles. Build a visible portfolio before applying: a GitHub profile with active projects, a personal website, or documented contributions to open-source repositories signal genuine technical investment.
