Business work experience: what it includes and how to find the best programmes
"Business work experience" covers a broad range of opportunities — from insight days at management consultancies to placements at accounting firms, commercial roles at large corporations, and week-long programmes at small businesses. The term is particularly common in GCSE and A-Level contexts, where students explore business as a career direction before committing to a specific function. For school students, the most accessible business work experience is with local businesses or organisations in commercial, administrative, or operational roles. These are often self-arranged through school placement programmes. For A-Level and undergraduate students, more structured options are available: Big Four accountancy firms (Deloitte, PwC, KPMG, EY) run school leaver and first-year programmes that cover audit, tax, advisory, and consulting. Management consultancies including McKinsey, Bain, BCG, and others run first-year insight days and penultimate-year summer programmes. Large corporations across retail, FMCG, logistics, and finance run industrial placements and summer internships. Studying business A-Level or a business-related degree is not required for most of these programmes. Commercial awareness — understanding how companies make money and create value — is more important than your specific qualification.
