Apprenticeships in the UK: levels, routes, and how to apply
Apprenticeships allow you to earn while you learn — combining paid work with structured study towards a recognised qualification. They are available at all levels, from Intermediate (Level 2, equivalent to five GCSEs) through to Degree (Level 6/7, equivalent to a bachelor's or master's degree). The most sought-after for school leavers and graduates are: School leaver apprenticeships (typically Level 3–4), offered by accountancy firms, banks, and professional services companies to A-Level students. These offer a route to professional qualifications such as ACA, ACCA, and AAT alongside full-time paid work. Degree apprenticeships (Level 6/7) combine full-time employment with part-time university study over three to five years. The employer pays all tuition fees and you receive a full salary throughout. Degree apprenticeships are now available in almost every sector: law, engineering, finance, technology, healthcare, and more. The market has expanded rapidly — organisations including Deloitte, PwC, Google, BAE Systems, the NHS, and the Civil Service all offer degree apprenticeships. Applications are competitive and follow a similar process to graduate recruitment: online form, online tests, and an assessment centre. Start researching specific programmes early — many open applications in September and October for the following academic year.
