Year 11 work experience: making the most of your GCSE year
Year 11 is typically when schools organise their work experience week — a placement of one to two weeks with a local employer. But it is also a good time to start exploring employer-run programmes that will be available to you in Year 12 and beyond. School-arranged placements in Year 11: these are usually arranged through your school's careers department. You may be given a list of employers to contact, or asked to arrange your own placement. Even an informal one-week placement at a local business counts — what matters is that you can discuss it intelligently in future applications. Employer-run Year 11 programmes: some large firms and organisations run specific programmes for Year 11 students, though fewer than for Year 12. Programmes targeting GCSE students typically include open days, taster sessions, and insight events. Pathways to Law, for example, runs programmes for Year 11 students.
