Work experience at GCSE level: building your first professional record
GCSE work experience — typically carried out in Year 10 or Year 11 — is most students' first encounter with a professional environment. Getting the most out of it depends on three things: choosing a placement that genuinely interests you rather than defaulting to convenience, preparing before you go, and reflecting on it afterwards in a way that produces usable material for future applications. School-arranged placements: most schools organise a designated work experience week in Year 10 or 11. You may arrange your own placement or choose from a school-maintained list. Even an informal, school-arranged placement at a local business is more valuable than nothing — the key is how you engage with it and what you say about it afterwards. Employer-run GCSE programmes: some larger employers — particularly in law, professional services, and healthcare — run specific programmes for GCSE students. The Pathways to Law programme, for example, selects Year 11 students. NHS trusts and local councils sometimes run taster sessions. These are more competitive than a school placement but more impressive on an application. Virtual options: virtual work experience programmes from Forage and similar platforms are accessible to GCSE students and can be completed alongside school without needing employer approval or travel. They are a practical addition to a school placement rather than a replacement for it.
