Graduate schemes are structured early career programmes offered by employers to recent graduates. They typically last between one and three years and rotate participants across different departments or projects. This page explains what to expect, when to apply, and how to prepare.
What is a graduate scheme?
A graduate scheme is a structured programme run by an employer for recent graduates. They typically last 18 months to 3 years. Participants work across different teams or functions, complete formal training, and receive mentorship and support. Graduate schemes are offered by large employers in law, finance, consulting, technology, engineering, the public sector, and many other industries. Salaries are typically higher than standard graduate entry roles, and schemes are designed to fast-track participants to senior positions.
When do applications open?
Most graduate scheme applications open in September and October and close between November and January. Some close as early as October. A small number of employers recruit on a rolling basis throughout the year. If you are in your penultimate or final year of university, you should start researching programmes in the summer before your final year. Applying early within a window is generally an advantage, as some employers close early once they have enough strong applications.
The application process
Graduate scheme applications typically involve five stages: an online application form, online assessments (numerical, verbal, and situational judgement), a video interview, an assessment centre, and a final panel interview. The assessment centre is often the most demanding stage, including group exercises, written tasks, case studies, and competency interviews. Each stage is usually eliminatory. You should prepare for each one separately.
Commercial awareness
Commercial awareness means understanding how businesses work, what affects a company's performance, and what is happening in the industry and wider economy. Most graduate scheme applications test this, either explicitly in interviews or through commercial judgement questions in assessments. Build commercial awareness by reading the Financial Times, the BBC Business pages, or industry publications. Keep a note of stories that interest you and form your own view on them.
How to choose the right scheme
Research schemes carefully before applying. The structure, culture, and progression vary significantly between employers. Attend employer events, open days, and information sessions. Talk to people who have been on the scheme. Read employee reviews. Make sure you can articulate clearly why you are applying to each employer and each specific programme, not just the industry or sector in general.
