How to Prepare for an Assessment Centre

What assessment centres involve, how to perform well in each activity, and how to prepare for a full assessment day.

Assessment centres are a common final stage in graduate scheme, internship, vacation scheme, and some apprenticeship applications. They typically last a half or full day and combine several activities. Understanding what each activity is testing and how to approach it is the best form of preparation.

What is an assessment centre?

An assessment centre is a selection event, usually in-person or virtual, where multiple applicants are assessed together by multiple assessors. Activities typically include a competency-based interview, a group exercise, a written exercise or case study, a presentation, and sometimes a final partner or senior interview. Most activities are observed by assessors who use structured scoring criteria.

The group exercise

Group exercises assess how you work with others, not just whether you are the loudest voice in the room. Assessors watch for: whether you contribute relevant points, whether you listen to others, whether you help the group move towards a decision, and whether you manage conflict constructively. Being assertive without dominating is the sweet spot. Introduce yourself at the start. Ask questions. Summarise the group's thinking when useful. Support others' good ideas rather than trying to be the person with all the ideas.

The written exercise

Written exercises typically ask you to read a briefing document and write a recommendation or response in a set time — often 30 to 45 minutes. Read the instructions carefully. Identify the key decision or question you must answer. Structure your response clearly with a brief introduction, your recommendation with two or three reasons, and a short conclusion. Use clear, professional language. Poor structure loses marks even when the content is good.

The presentation

If you are asked to present, your goal is to communicate clearly and confidently, not to impress with complexity. Know your content so well that you do not need to read from notes or slides. Use a clear structure. Speak at a measured pace. Make eye contact with the panel. Anticipate two or three likely questions and have clear answers prepared. Rehearse out loud at least twice before the day.

The competency interview

Most assessment centres include at least one formal competency interview. Prepare your STAR examples in advance. Know the competencies the employer has listed in their job description or application guidance. Practise giving each answer in approximately two to three minutes. Do not over-prepare scripted answers — interviewers can tell when you are reading from memory rather than recalling a real experience.

Assessor observations throughout the day

Some employers assess your behaviour throughout the entire day — including during lunch, between activities, and in informal conversations with current employees. Be professional, curious, and friendly at all times. Ask genuine questions. Avoid speaking negatively about the application process or other candidates. Network naturally.

Checklist

  • Research the employer's competencies and values
  • Prepare at least six STAR examples across different competencies
  • Practise a group exercise with peers
  • Rehearse your presentation out loud, not just in your head
  • Prepare two or three questions to ask at the end of each activity
  • Read the brief or preparation materials sent in advance
  • Plan your journey or technology setup the day before

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Dominating the group exercise instead of facilitating it
  • Not listening to others' contributions in group activities
  • Reading from notes or slides during a presentation
  • Being unprepared for the written exercise structure
  • Relaxing too much during informal parts of the day when assessors may still be watching
