Online work experience: what is available, what counts, and how to make it useful
Online work experience — also called virtual work experience or remote placements — has grown significantly as a category of student opportunity. The most well-known source is Forage, a platform that delivers virtual work experience programmes on behalf of major employers including Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Clifford Chance, BCG, Deloitte, and many others. These programmes simulate real professional tasks: building financial models, drafting legal documents, conducting research, writing presentations. They are typically free, self-paced, and take between three and twelve hours to complete. Live virtual programmes: some employers also run live virtual events — insight days, open days, and work experience weeks — delivered over video call rather than in person. These have more structure and employer interaction than self-paced online modules. Direct remote placements: a smaller number of employers — particularly in technology, marketing, and research — offer genuine remote work experience where students complete tasks for the organisation from home. These are less common but more substantive than self-paced modules. How to reference online experience: when including virtual programmes in applications, be specific about the programme name, the employer who ran it, and what you did. "I completed Goldman Sachs' investment banking virtual experience on Forage, working through equity research tasks and a client pitch exercise" is far stronger than "I completed an online work experience programme." Generic references to virtual experience without specifics carry little weight.
